Karissa Underwater

Video Link:  http://animoto.com/play/3bjoByMKDjdruR8jx4MEqg

We had been waiting since Christmas for an opportunity to hop in the pool (ANY pool) wearing something that clearly wasn't a bathing suit for our first underwater shoot. Contrary to what most people think we try to not draw attention to what we are doing.  Usually a shoot is so busy managing the million things that make a shoot work that there isn't time to deal with those who are fascinated with what we're up to.  And, drawing too much attention usually means who ever is in charge (and there is always somebody who is) will show up and throw a wrench into the picture.

Especially when we are doing something on the fringe. No this wasn't a scandalous shoot by any stretch.  And even though the rules didn't say we couldn't wear a tutu and high heels or 10 yards of fabric we were pretty sure we were pushing the other rules.  The Obvious Rule.  (Oh, maybe tutus change the ph balance of the water or red lipstick causes a red ring on the tiles around the pool...or maybe it's the peculiarity factor, or we'd scare small children who knows...but when you shoot a lot it's the first thing you think about.  Getting booted out of our shoot prematurely.  You'd be surprised how much goes into a shoot and by the time you get all your ducks lined up and are finally shooting NOTHING and I do mean, NOTHING, gets in the way of tunnel vision. And we lucked out yesterday, no problems at all.

65 degrees, grey sky, high wind and we had a pool to our ourself.  We were thrilled.  Finally!

The outfit?  We started out with your standard tulle skirt with a bunch of a red tulle gathered at the wrist and ankles over a bathing suit.  Add the perfect pair of red lips and Karissa's Ray Bans and we had a 'look'.  And it looked great. And, those red ankle bracelets turned into the perfect beacon for the camera to spot her.  Problem with this underwater photography and digital cameras is you can't see very well, soft colors just fade into nothingness.  Shooting underwater means a lot of guessing and an awful lot of swimming for the model!  Like, way way a lot.

So our little plan with tulle, sunglasses & red lipstick turned out better than we hoped.  Karissa tirelessly dove down into the pool to offer up yet another pose, continually willing to model for as long as I was willing to shoot, and she did great!

Where is Pretty Muse going with the underwater stuff? There are other plans afoot. Lots more of the pool variety.  If you read our Facebook wall you already know about the brass bed we bought and intend to plop in the ocean.  And then there is another shoot planned where we turn someone's private pool into an underwater bedroom.  (gasp!)  Yep, brass bed, window curtains, paintings on the wall and a underwater damsel floating about.  I'm fired up about that one!!!

How can one resist more of this?  Karissa prepare to be wet a LOT this season.  And I know there are other models begging for underwater photography and of course, the coveted mermaid fantasy seems to be a universal theme, so it seems like I'm going to have to figure out a way to deliver.

How much would you love to be my next character?  The mermaid?

Enjoy our first foray into the deep, ok, only 6 feet, but it's a beginning, a good one.

Sneak Peek of Karissa Ferguson Underwater

Karissa and I go underwater for our first attempt at underwater photography.  This is much harder than it looks. But totally worth the extra effort.
We had Karissa put on a tulle tutu, deep red lipstick and her Ray Bans and presto, what looks rather peculiar on land looks totally divine in the water.  Stay tuned for the full post.

Mercy in the Field - Part 2

Mercy brought her sketch book and doodled.  She doodled and doodled and true to her own inner dreams she drew a beautiful mermaid with the cutest hair. She wrote a poem about a romantic swim underneath the sea, she's full of romance and whimsey, easy laughter and dreams.

(Be sure to catch the video:  Video:  http://animoto.com/play/v62vyUPKgcSzCiswVy4Uew)

She read us the poem, "Swimming beneath the sea, nothing but you and me.  Casually drifting with the current..."  You get the impression that her head is full of notions of the glittering ocean, big puffy clouds, pretty dresses, songsters and lingering lovers. Who knows, I never asked, but I like imagining what goes on in her pretty little head.  I prefer the fancy notions I impose, than getting the facts right.  I'm sure she doesn't mind my colorful imagination because she has a similliar spirit.

Who knows what she's thinking; her next dive beneath the waves, a sunrise on the rocks, learning how to tame her new skate board?  It doesn't matter what's going on in that head. She's food for foder.  She feeds the creative juices.  She's a muse.   One doesn't learn how to be a muse, one simply is.

I think it's divinely curious that two different photographers found her.  Two people who didn't know each other saw the magic --- she wasn't trying to impress.  She's not that type.  She walks to her own inner beat, happy and content with her own path.  That photographers come along and snatch her up I suppose is fun for her, but I don't think she really cares, which makes her all the more alluring.

Thank you Mercy.  You are a beautiful muse.  Thank you for feeding my soul, causing me to ponder about my next shoot.  What will I shoot?  Where?  Oh, wait.  We shot you again at the beach yesterday, haha.  Yes, more Mercy coming up tomorrow!
